Summary

(Part 1)
Statue Height  38.8cm

Wooden, Japanese Judas tree, single wood-block sculpture, with Chogan technique (Eyes carved directly into the surface of a wooden sculpture), and showing the natural wood base.
It is the left attendant, wearing China robe, and bandanna on head, browbeating eyes with mouth shut.
Oval-faced and left arm bent and hold an object, right elbow is missing.
Seated on a rock with both legs pendant, right leg is missing.
It is the work of late Heian period, and it shows peaceful atmosphere.
Also, it is a precious example of an old image of a deity in Iwate.

Wooden, Japanese Judas tree, single wood-block sculpture, with Chogan technique, and showing the natural wood base.
It is the right attendant, wearing outer robe, and hair style is unclear.
The face turned slightly to the right, and the both arms bent and seated on a rock with both legs pendant.
It is the work of late Heian period, and it shows peaceful atmosphere.
There is a inscription of “Kumano” and “Wakiji” with black ink in the bottom of the seating base, considered to be added in medieval times.
It is said to be the one of “Kumano three Main deities” together with the goddess previously mentioned. However, there are some incompatibility between them, and most likely they were not meant to be the same companion.
