Local Cuisine

The local cuisine of Iwate came to exist through the inherited knowledge of its incestors and the blessed nature of Iwate. With the Pacific Ocean on the eastern side and Ou Mountains on the western side, Iwate has a variety of geographical characteristics. Furthermore, with Sendai Domain at the southern side and Morioka Domain at the northern side during the feudal period, the difference in food culture between these two areas has brought forth a further diversity to its local cuisine. At present, the southern part of Iwate is famous for its "Mochi (rice cake) Culture" while the northern part is famous for its "Millet Culture" such as soybean, wheat, soba and hie (Japanese millet).
